Grassland-based meat production
At various events that have focussed on the sustainable production of meat, the solutions have always been very similar. Meat can be produced sustainably by keeping ruminants on grassland, adapted to their location. Cattle and sheep should only be kept on pasture and only achieve satisfactory daily weight gains by consuming pasture feed. This means that the ruminants only consume feed that cannot be digested by humans and no concentrated feed made from grain that can be digested directly by humans, i.e. according to the ‘feed no food’ principle. For phases with increased energy requirements, by-products from the processing of grain could still be fed to ruminants. In addition to the sustainable aspect of grazing, the free movement of the animals on the pasture must of course also be mentioned. Because only on large pastures can the animals live out their natural behaviour patterns without restrictions and feed on grasses and herbs from the pasture in a ruminant-friendly way.
Thanks to its activities, GVFI is familiar with a wide variety of husbandry systems worldwide and can therefore purchase high-quality beef and lamb that comes from animals kept on pasture all year round.
